Understanding Pakistan Railway Timetables — UP & DOWN Trains Explained
Pakistan Railways uses a directional numbering system that confuses many first-time passengers. Here is a complete guide to reading Pakistan railway schedules and understanding what UP, DOWN, and train numbers mean.
01What Does UP and DOWN Mean on Pakistan Railways?
Pakistan Railways uses the terms UP and DOWN to describe the direction of travel for every train on its network. On the main Karachi–Lahore–Peshawar corridor, trains heading north (away from Karachi toward Lahore, Rawalpindi, or Peshawar) are called UP trains. Trains heading south back toward Karachi are called DOWN trains. This convention dates back to the British colonial era when rail lines were graded and trains heading "up" toward higher elevation or principal hubs were labeled accordingly. Today the system is purely directional — not geographic — and applies consistently across the entire 7,791 km Pakistan Railways network.
02How Pakistan Railway Train Numbers Work
Every Pakistan Railways passenger train is assigned a pair of numbers — one for each direction of travel. Odd numbers are always UP services and even numbers are always DOWN services. For example, Tezgam Express is numbered 7UP when traveling from Karachi to Lahore and 8DN on its return. Green Line Express runs as 1UP from Karachi to Islamabad and 2DN on the way back. Khyber Mail, one of Pakistan's oldest trains, uses 1M going up and 2M going down — the "M" denoting its "Mail" classification. On our live train tracker, you will always see the train direction label next to the train name so you immediately know which way the service is running.
03Reading the Pakistan Railway Timetable — Column by Column
The official Pakistan Railways timetable lists every station stop for each train in sequence. The ARR column shows the scheduled arrival time and the DEP column shows the scheduled departure time at each station. At terminal stations — the first and last stop — only a departure or arrival time is shown respectively. Times use 24-hour format: 14:30 means 2:30 PM, 00:15 means 12:15 AM (just past midnight). When a train has the same ARR and DEP time, it means a very brief stop of under a minute — just long enough for passengers to board or alight. When the gap between ARR and DEP is 5 minutes or more, the train officially waits at that station, often to cross an oncoming service on a single-track section.
04Train Frequency — Daily vs. Certain Days Only
Not all Pakistan Railways trains run every day. Express trains on the main Karachi–Lahore corridor generally run daily or six days a week. But many mail trains, passenger trains, and services on secondary routes operate only on specific days — for example, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or only on weekdays. The official train timetable marks these restrictions with day codes. On TrainTracking.pk, the live train list only shows trains that are actually running today, so if a train does not appear in our live dashboard, it is likely not scheduled to operate on that particular day. Always verify the day of operation before arriving at the station to avoid wasted trips.
05Eid Special & Festival Trains in Pakistan
During major Pakistani holidays — particularly Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha — Pakistan Railways adds extra services called Eid Special trains on the highest-demand routes. These special trains are temporary additions to the regular timetable, typically running for 7 to 10 days around the holiday. They offer the same classes as regular express trains and are priced at standard fares — you can estimate them with our fare calculator. Booking opens 15–30 days before the Eid holiday and seats sell out extremely fast — within hours of opening for popular routes. TrainTracking.pk tracks all Eid Special trains in real time once they begin operating. If you are planning Eid travel, book at least three to four weeks ahead and use our live tracker to monitor your train — and its live speed — on the day of travel.
Quick Reference
- UP Train:Heading toward Lahore/ISB/Peshawar
- DOWN Train:Heading toward Karachi
- Odd Number:UP direction (7, 27, 69…)
- Even Number:DOWN direction (8, 28, 70…)
- Time Format:24-hr (14:30 = 2:30 PM)
- ARR / DEP:Arrival / Departure columns

View Live TrainsKarachi to Lahore by Train — The Complete 2026 Guide
Pakistan's most-traveled railway corridor: 1,286 km connecting the country's two largest cities. Multiple daily departures, every fare class, and some of Pakistan's most iconic trains.
The Karachi–Lahore Main Line
The Karachi–Lahore main line is the most commercially important rail corridor in Pakistan, stretching approximately 1,286 kilometres across two provinces. The route starts at Karachi Cantonment Station — Pakistan's busiest passenger terminal — and passes through major cities including Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Sukkur, Rohri Junction, Bahawalpur, Lodhran, Khanewal, Multan Cantonment, and Sahiwal before terminating at Lahore Junction. The journey takes between 14 and 22 hours depending on the train service you choose — you can compare options in our journey planner. Since the route crosses the flat plains of Sindh and Punjab, it is comfortable at night in a sleeper or AC berth.
Which Train Should You Take?
Pakistan's flagship train with modern Chinese-built coaches, USB charging at every seat, clean maintained washrooms, and push-back reclining seats. The most comfortable option on this route — ideal for those who prioritize quality over cost. Books out fast, so reserve 10–14 days ahead.
The fastest service between Lahore and Karachi, favored by business travelers. Departs at a convenient time and runs with strong punctuality. If you need to arrive quickly and sleep is not the priority, Business Express is the clear choice.
Pakistan's most iconic express train, running since 1954. Evening departure from Karachi means you sleep through the journey and wake up in Lahore. Offers all classes from Economy to AC Business. Very well known, very reliable, and consistently among the most punctual main-line expresses.
A longer journey with more station stops — useful if you need to break the journey at Multan or Bahawalpur. Slightly cheaper fares and more seat availability at short notice. Good option for flexible, budget-conscious travelers.
Key Stops Along the Way
The Karachi–Lahore route passes through the heart of Pakistan. Hyderabad (2–3 hrs from Karachi) is Sindh's second city and a major boarding point. Sukkur sits on the Indus River and is surrounded by ancient sites. Rohri Junction is one of the biggest railway junctions in Pakistan, where the Quetta branch diverges. Multan Cantonment is the biggest boarding point in southern Punjab — the City of Saints is always busy with passengers. Sahiwal is the last major stop before Lahore. Each of these cities has its own station with basic facilities, tea stalls, and vendors.
Booking Tips for Karachi–Lahore Travel
- Book 14–21 days ahead for AC Business and AC Sleeper — these classes sell out fast on popular trains.
- Weekday departures (Tuesday, Wednesday, Wednesday) typically have better availability than Friday and Sunday.
- If your preferred class is sold out, check multiple trains — Tezgam, Karakoram, and Green Line all cover this route.
- For group travel, ask for adjacent berths in the same compartment when booking at a station office.
- Lahore Junction has multiple platforms — check your platform number on the arrival/departure board, not just from your ticket.

Everything you need to know before boarding your first Pakistan Railways train — from booking to arrival, packing to safety. Step-by-step for a stress-free journey.
Before You Travel — Planning & Booking
Use TrainTracking.pk to search by route, check which trains are currently running on time, and compare classes. For overnight journeys over 8 hours, always book a sleeping class (AC Sleeper or AC Business) — sitting upright for that long is exhausting.
AC Business and AC Sleeper berths on express trains (Tezgam, Green Line, Business Express) sell out 7 to 21 days before departure. Economy AC seats have more availability but still benefit from early booking. Book online via the Pakistan Railways e-ticketing website or visit your nearest station booking office with your CNIC.
Pakistan Railways requires all passengers to have a valid national identity card or passport matching the name on the ticket. Ticket Checkers (TCs) verify identity on board and mismatched identity results in a fine. Children under 5 travel free; ages 5–12 at half fare.
What to Pack for a Pakistan Train Journey
CNIC/passport, ticket printout or SMS confirmation, phone fully charged, power bank (essential for overnight journeys — socket availability is inconsistent), cash (train vendors are cash-only), water bottle and snacks for at least half the journey duration.
Light blanket or shawl (AC coaches can become very cold, especially in winter), neck pillow for sleeping on seated classes, noise-canceling earphones, wet wipes and small toiletries (toilet paper is rarely provided), lip balm and moisturizer (AC air is dry).
Overhead racks have limited space and no formal baggage allowance enforcement, but excessively large bags create conflict with other passengers. Two medium-sized bags per person is practical. Never leave luggage unattended on the platform or in the coach.
Navigating Pakistan Railway Stations
Major stations like Karachi Cantonment and Lahore Junction can be crowded and confusing. Arrive with enough time to find your platform, locate your coach, and store luggage comfortably before departure. Platform assignments are announced on the departure board typically 20–30 minutes before departure.
Your ticket shows a coach number (e.g., "S-2" for AC Sleeper coach 2, "L-4" for Economy AC coach 4). Coaches are labeled on the exterior of each carriage. Trains are long — walk along the platform to find your coach rather than boarding the first door you see. The front of the train (locomotive end) is usually toward the direction of travel.
Large stations have tea stalls, food vendors, waiting lounges (first class waiting rooms for AC ticket holders), prayer areas, and basic washrooms. Smaller stations may have nothing beyond a platform and a basic tea stall. Stock up at departure stations.
On Board — Safety & Comfort
Keep your phone, wallet, and passport in a front pocket or inside a zipped bag at all times. At station stops, vendors and passengers board quickly — this is when petty theft is most likely. In sleeper coaches at night, keep your bag locked and close to you.
Pakistan Railways has designated Women's Compartments on most trains. Solo female travelers are strongly advised to book these compartments or choose AC Business class where closed 2-berth coupes offer privacy. Traveling with a group is always more comfortable.
Train washrooms in Pakistan range from basic to poor in cleanliness, especially toward the end of long journeys. Carry your own toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and wet wipes. AC Business class has the cleanest facilities. Green Line's modern coaches have better-maintained washrooms than most other services.
The Golden Rule of Pakistan Train Travel
Always track your train on our live train tracker before leaving home. If the train is running 2+ hours late, there is no reason to sit on a platform waiting. Our real-time GPS tracker updates every 30 seconds — check its live speed and position to leave home at the right time, not the scheduled departure time.
How to Check Pakistan Train Running Status & Delay Today
Train delays are a fact of life on Pakistan Railways. Understanding why delays happen, how to track them in real time, and what to do when your train is late will save you hours of frustration.
Why Pakistan Trains Get Delayed
Pakistan Railways operates largely on a single-track network, which means trains traveling in opposite directions share the same line and must wait at crossing stations for oncoming services to pass. This is the single biggest cause of delays. When one express train runs late, it pushes back the crossing schedule for several other trains — creating a cascade of delays that can ripple across hundreds of kilometres of the network within hours.
Other common causes include locomotive failures (an older diesel locomotive breaking down mid-route can cause 2–4 hour delays while a replacement is dispatched), track maintenance work (planned slow zones reduce speed on sections under repair), signal failures at junctions, and station congestion at major hubs like Lahore Junction or Multan Cantonment where platform availability is limited.
How TrainTracking.pk Calculates Delay
Our platform receives live GPS coordinates from Pakistan Railways' tracking infrastructure every 30 seconds. We compare the train's actual position against its scheduled position on the timetable to calculate the current delay in minutes. For example, if Tezgam Express should be passing Nawabshah at 03:00 AM but our GPS shows it is still 45 km south of Nawabshah at that time, we use its current speed to estimate how long it will take to reach Nawabshah and add that to the schedule difference.
Reading the Delay Display on TrainTracking.pk
Trains commonly arrive within 10 minutes of schedule. No action needed.
Monitor closely. This may recover partially but usually does not fully clear by arrival.
Do not rush to the station. Stay home and keep checking. ETA has shifted substantially.
What To Do When Your Train is Delayed
Open the live tracker and search for your train. You will see its current position, speed, and estimated arrival time at each upcoming station. Refresh every few minutes as delay figures update with each GPS ping.
If the delay is over 1 hour, there is no reason to be at the platform early. Waiting at a crowded station for hours is uncomfortable and avoidable. Use our ETA to judge when to leave home.
The official helpline operates 24/7 and can provide station-level information, including whether a delayed train is expected to make up time or if there's an incident causing an extended hold.
Share the TrainTracking.pk live link with family or friends waiting to pick you up at the destination station. They can track your train in real time and time their arrival at the station perfectly.
